Meet Nathan Grooby: The 15 year old gaming designer prodigy
“Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.”
It's time for you to meet Nathan Grooby, a 15-year-old designer whose love of gaming has inspired and catapulted him into a career of graphic design, with a twist! Nathan joined us 4 months ago for two weeks of work experience, and now that he's back, we decided it was well and truly time for you to get to know him.
So, without further ado...
Hi, I'm Nathan
I love to design graphics for a lot of different people! I can produce a lot of different design styles, but I specialise in a particularly strange style that is related to a game called Minecraft.
Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew, players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.
I've always had a passion for designing because it's almost like a break from reality, where you can just let your imagination and creativity design something amazing. After seeing people on YouTube who were designing and animating this game I performed a quick search around the net, watched a few tutorials on designing using Cinema 4D and soon enough I was designing and selling my Minecraft inspired artwork with a YouTube channel of nearly 800 subscribers.
To think playing a block game would lead to this is something I would never have anticipated and something that has certainly made my passion of designing a much more exciting and fun experience.
People always ask me how I became so good at designing these Minecraft characters and I was always asked if I was taught. My answer to that is no I wasn't taught I just kept working and working on progressing my artwork and the more I worked on each piece the more familiar I became with designing these characters.
When I look back on my journey to where I am now with my designing career it's always funny to think that a block game that I casually played led to something so rewarding and fun and I know the skills I've learnt over the past 7-8 months I'll carry with me for the future to come.

While Nathan was here with us last, we asked him to design all of us as Minecraft players, and here's what he came up with:
We think it looks pretty awesome!
